There is a world of poker variants out there, each with its own strategies and tactics. However, unlike most, Three Card Poker simplifies the game rather than adding a complex rule system. This can make for a very enjoyable experience, as it’s relatively simple to play but difficult to master.
Basic Three Card Poker Strategy
In terms of Three Card Poker, perhaps the most well-known strategy is to make a game bet if you have Queen-6-4 or better (Q-6-4). You should also bet if your high card is an Ace or King, regardless of the value of your other cards. Unless they are a pair, if your highest card is lower than Jack, then fold regardless of your other cards.

Know your hand ranking
Poker cards generally have the same ranking no matter what variation you play. However, since this game only has three cards, the hands work slightly differently. Three Card Poker cards are ranked from weakest to strongest as follows:
- High card
- a pair
- Straight Flush (three cards of the same suit)
- Straight (three consecutive cards ranked numerically)
- The three are unique
- Straight Flush (three consecutively ranked cards of the same suit)
In the event of a tie, the highest card in the combination wins. For example, the AJ2 sits flush with the A87. AJ2 will beat A87 because the second-ranked card after Ace is higher in AJ2 (Jack) than A87 (Eight).
Another example is JJA23 vs. JJQKT. The winning hand would be JJA32 because the Ace Amplifier is higher than the King Amplifier of JJKQT. The second kicker will only be considered if both pairs have the same first kicker.
Suits are not used to determine victory in Three Card Poker.
bet
The bet is your first bet, made after you see your cards. At this point, you can fold or place a bet equal to your bet. When the dealer has no queen or a better queen, then you win, regardless of whether your hand beats the dealer’s. When you lose, the bookmaker will collect your bet and bet.
Hands that do not contain a pair or better will be ranked by the highest card, moving to the second highest card if the player and the dealer have the same card. This continues to the third highest and if a tie occurs again all bets will be returned.

If you have a pair or better and place a bonus bet on the pair (more on that below), then place the bet.
When you have a queen, bet if your second hand is a 7 or higher. The value of any subsequent cards is irrelevant.
When you have a queen and your second card is a 6, bet only if the third card is a 4 or 5.
If your hand is Queen High, your second hand is a 6, and your third hand is a 2 or 3, always fold. If your hand is queen-high and your second-highest hand is a 5, fold regardless of the value of any other card.

The staking bonus is your main bet and you get bonuses based on the hands you play. Bonuses will vary depending on the casino and table you play at. Typically, a straight flush or higher will give you odds of 5/1, three straight flushes will give you 4/1 and a straight 1/1.
Of course, each has a different chance of happening, with a flush or higher happening about 0.20% of the time. It’s also worth noting that of all the bets in the game, betting offers you the best advantage and is most likely to lead to a positive outcome.
Extra bets on Three Card Poker
What makes Three Card Poker exciting is the option to increase your bet with optional bonuses. Different casinos may have a range of these, or some may keep them to a minimum. There are two main questions you should consider.

The first of these is pair plus. This bet is placed before the cards are dealt. Once completed, it cannot be added or withdrawn. This bonus is based on the strength of your three cards.
Your payment is determined on a separate payment schedule regardless of whether the reseller is eligible. This table may vary from casino to casino, so you may want to check before you start playing. Most people will follow these odds:

- Flush – 4 to 1

Six card bonus
This bonus bet uses all six cards, your three cards and the dealer’s three cards. Any of the six cards can be combined, with winning hands starting with three cards and going all the way up to the Royal Flush. Some casinos may even allow 9s to Aces of the same suit, which results in obviously huge payouts.
What is the house edge in Three Card Poker?
The house edge describes the mathematical advantage the house has over you. Expressed as a percentage, it shows how much profit a player keeps on their bets over a period of time. All casino games have this because without them the house would not be profitable and functional.
The average house edge rating in Three Card Poker is around 3.7%. As mentioned above, you can slightly increase the odds in your favor by sticking to the Q-6-4 rule, which will reduce the house edge to around 2%. When you start using paired raises, it changes to 2.3%.
Three Card Poker Etiquette
If you want to up your ante and play your hand, it’s etiquette to arrange your cards correctly. They should be placed horizontally in the game box, from low to high, face down. Your bet should be on top of your cards.
In land-based games, it is customary to tip the dealer. This only needs to happen when you win, not every time. A 10% win is usually the right amount.
